What is the treatment for Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is primarily treated with antibiotics. Sometimes tonsils need to be removed (tonsillectomy), especially if the person has a severe or persistent infection. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and sometimes in a hospital setting, but can also be done as an office procedure.

Treatment for this condition may vary according to the severity of its symptoms. Oral medication for pain relief, oral antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are generally recommended for acute tonsilitis. Failure to respond within 24 hours or worsening will require intravenous therapy or admission to the hospital.

There are tons of over-the-counter medicines as well as prescription drugs to help treat Tonsillitis. However, many people who suffer from recurrent episodes of Tonsillitis may benefit more from surgical removal of their tonsils known as a "tonsillectomy."  A study published in the December 2011 issue of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery looked at 240 patients with at least 4 episodes of acute Tonsillitis over one year. The researchers found that only 20 percent were cured with antibiotic treatment alone while nearly half (49 percent) required both antibiotics and surgery. These results indicate that for many people with frequent bouts of Tonsillitis, surgery is not just beneficial but necessary to find long term relief.

Tonsillectomy is known to be relatively safe, but it does have some risks. These include bleeding 1-2 days after surgery, inflammation of the soft palate or uvula 1-10 days after surgery, damage to surrounding organs during the surgery , and fever within 3 weeks of surgery .

So if you are suffering from Tonsillitis it's best to consult with your doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment options.

Is Tonsillitis Contagious?

Tonsillitis is a common inflammatory infection that affects the tonsils in the throat. This infection mainly occurs when bacteria enter the throat through food items contaminated by microorganisms like bacteria or viruses.

Who can treat tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis can be self-treated through medications. It is essential to take antibiotics to cure the condition and avoid complications such as a peritonsillar abscess. A tonsillectomy can also help eliminate tonsillitis. Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia depending on the procedures chosen by your surgeon.

This study aimed to compare the infection rates of children who received either no vaccinations or selective vaccinations that excluded pertussis (whooping cough). They found that "vaccination coverage with 3 doses of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and whole-cell pertussis vaccine (DTP3) was associated with lower pertussis attack rate than those who received no vaccine or only 1 or 2 doses of DTP3."
